Pledge to Transform Westchester and Playa Del Rey Schools

I, ___________________________________, will, as a member of the Los Angeles School Board, pledge all my effort, resources, and influence to make the public schools of Westchester and Playa Del Rey the best they can be. I pledge myself to help bring forth upon this neighborhood a new, revitalized family of schools, conceived in greatness, and dedicated to the propositions that:

Students come first, before unions, school district bureaucracies, politics, or any other adult and their needs. Schools must be dedicated to helping each and every student fulfill his or her potential in a safe, stimulating environment.

Schools must be great places to learn. They must be small enough so that every child gets the attention they need, and so that no children fall through the cracks. The schools should work together as a family to achieve the scale needed to provide a wide range of educational, enrichment, and athletic programs and facilities.

Schools must be great places to work. Schools must provide teachers and all other employees with the professional development, career opportunities, and compensation they need to thrive.

Only great teachers or those with the potential to be great teachers teach our children. We must be fair and supportive but rigorous in evaluating teachers.

Schools belong first and foremost to the communities they serve. Our schools will be governed by a board democratically elected by stakeholders of the schools:  one vote per community resident, parent of current and future students, and school employee.

Our Family of Schools must have strong, local leadership who provides great educational leadership and operational management. Principals must be accountable to this leadership. Teachers must be accountable to principals. The pre-schools, elementary, middle, and high schools must work together under a common vision and purpose of enabling every student to fulfill his or her potential.

School facilities and resources must be accessible to the community when school is not in session, because the schools belong to the community.

All promises made by LAUSD to our Family of Schools when we voted to join iDivision will be upheld.  These promises include complete autonomy in the areas of 1) Hiring/firing of staff, 2) Curriculum, 3) Bell Schedules, 4) Budgets/spending, and 5) Operations.

I commit to working with all stakeholders to transform the Westchester and Playa Del Rey family of schools within three years.
